1970-1972 Formula 1 Highlights - Volume 1
1970-1972 were 3 years in Formula 1 that marked an era of great accomplishments, and
terrible disasters. 1970 began with the sight of an innovative wedge-shaped Lotus 72
featuring torsion bar suspension, hip-mounted radiators, and an overhanging rear wing.
Austrian driver Jochen Rindt drove the radical Lotus 72 to a substantial points lead, but
his life was cut short in a tragic accident at Monza, and this would be the first and only
time the F1 Championship would be awarded posthumously. In 1971, Lotus experimented
with a gas turbine car, while Ken Tyrrell, and a brilliant driver named Jackie Stewart,
took the 1971 title. In 1972, Lotus teamed up with the John Player Special brand, and a
25-year old Emerson Fittipaldi became the youngest F1 Champion in history.
